“The Canal is a refuge, a place of retreat, a long stretch of quiet and peace at the Capitol's back door…”
- William O. Douglas, Supreme Court Justice
About Justice William O. Douglas Justice
Douglas is well known for his work as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. As an avid conservationist and frequent hiker of the C&O Canal, he devoted decades to leading and organizing efforts to preserve the long-neglected canal for future generations. His efforts eventually resulted in the C&O Canal officially being designated as a National Historic Park in 1971. In recognition of his legacy and in carrying on the tradition of service espoused by Justice Douglas, a longtime Georgetown resident and tireless advocate for promulgating the beauty, history, wildlife, and recreational opportunities afforded by the canal with the community and visitors, Georgetown Heritage’s advisory council bears his name.
